Paving a Path to Excellence

You may know we have transitioned to become a Division I Independent program under USA Rugby. This elevates our ability to compete for national championships. With a firm base of veterans, and our largest recruiting class yet – 15, including 2 international exchange students – we feel good entering the season. The focus and attitude of the group inspires competitive energy in training sessions. And the mix of talents and backgrounds makes this group very exciting.

This past weekend we played our first D-1 rugby taking on Colorado State, Utah State and University of Colorado at the Jackalope Tournament in Laramie, WY. Now competing against the top clubs in the nation, our margin of error is miniscule. The pace of the game at the next level is new to a lot of our players, who now understand the importance of our conditioning. We lost most ground in reacting between transitions, mainly on penalties and kickoffs where the other teams were simply more polished. Despite this, players never ceased to compete and never hung their heads. This attitude is a pillar of our team culture and will be the ultimate driver of our success.

Following a great rugby weekend the coaches now better understand the areas of our game that need work to become the intelligent, upbeat and fit side we continue to work toward. We’re excited about this weekend’s trip to Alpine, WY to play University of Wyoming on the beautiful “Field of Dreams” pitch.

Remaining Fall 2015 Schedule Sept 19: Wyoming University @ "The Field of Dreams" in Alpine, WY Sept 26th: Kootenai Cup in Spokane Oct 3rd: Utah State University @ home Oct 10th: U of M Jesters @ home Oct 31st: Western State College of Colorado @ home

Of equal importance is the club’s presence off the field. This year, we will continue our service at the Community Café. Also, over the summer the club entered middle and high schools around the valley to share our sport with a number of PE classes, in an effort to build a youth program in the valley.

A very special thank you to those who came out this past weekend. With your support, we will continue to build this program and move the club towards sustained success. Fan mail, hate mail and contributions alike can be written to MSU Rugby Club and mailed to:
